Iran has inaugurated the 1st International Conference on the 'Role of Geoparks' in the Tourism Industry Development on Monday.
The 3-day seminar being held in the Qeshm Free Zone is attended by UNESCO representatives, Head of Iran's Environment Organization, President of Malaysian Geopark, Chief of UNESCO Geoparks and the Head of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization.
A comprehensive plan on the building and function of the Qeshm Geopark will be examined during the conference.
The Qeshm island facility was selected by UNESCO's Global Network of Geoparks as its member in June 2006. The geopark is located in the western part of the Qeshm Free Zone island and covers over 32,000 hectares.
The event is sponsored by Qeshm Free Zone Organization and the Scientific-Cultural Department of UNESCO.
